Time's Up
Vinyl print installation, 43 x 200 in
This work aims to elicit stress and caution from the widely known and commonly understood meaning behind 11:59 as a comment on students’ approach towards time. From one side of the glass, a large 11:59 forms, but seen from the other side and up close, smaller 11:59s appears in larger amounts. This mirrors the small anxieties we have in our lives that piles up and becomes immense stress that feels unmanageable.
INSPIRATION
Almost every student at UW has experienced the midnight deadline that sets at 11:59pm. It happens so often that whenever we see this number, it triggers our internal alarm that some work is to be submitted. Since Odegaard Library is open for 24 hours if the next day is a school day, many people choose to stay up as late as possible to meet the deadlines. Time is always pushing us forward, yet 11:59pm seems like a stopping point in a timeline - when passed, it felt like we can take a breath again. However, making such a visible announcement of deadline in a place where people come to work towards those deadlines is also to comment on people’s habits of procrastination and leaving work to the last minute. A lot of stress can be avoided if we make a simple decision of not giving into distraction or make the “right” decisions to plan and organize. However, as a human being in this world, it is virtually impossible to dissociate oneself from distractions.
PROCESS
First attempt at vinyl printing was a complex but rewarding learning process. With limited resources and budget, I engaged in the process of dreaming big then dialing it down realistically. A lot of precise measurements were taken into consideration in order align the separate pieces of vinyl stickers.
